The wealthy and politically connected elite are always protected.

I am talking about most Americans, including the middle class.

My daughter is fine, but since I was on the phone with her the whole time she was frantically running to find safe shelter, it traumatized me. If I could have magically transported to her side, I would have taken a bullet in a heartbeat.

The police shot and killed the gunman. I kept looking at the pictures to make sure he was really dead.

Edit to add:
My father was career USAF, he flew combat in three wars. He did not risk his life over and over so that his grandchild could be shot and killed while walking to class. He would be totally disgusted with the American people for letting this happen. I am thankful he is not alive to witness the disgrace that is today's America.
