In some ways, it's also because of the huge amount of new from all over and everywhere. And there's so many more outlets than papers - tv, cable, internet - how many 24hr news sources we have and instant on the scene reporting. Compare that to the last battle of the War of 1812 happening several weeks after the US and GB signed the Treaty of Ghent ending that war. That battle was at New Orleans.

We are in an information avalanche every day, and the organs are all carrying, by and large, the same stories regardless of the individual takes. This invites sensation to become the attention grabber for ratings and paper sales.
