(52,676 posts)A candidate can only use campaign contributions for expenses directly related to campaigning.
Hillary's "$350,000 a plate fundraiser" (which, incidentally, raised funds for "downticket" candidates - congresscritters, governors and state legislators...the kind of people either Bernie or Hillary will need to be Democrats if they want to get anything done in the next few years) is directly related to campaigning. Therefore, it is fine to do that PER FEDERAL ELECTION COMMISSION REGULATION. I understand you don't like the optics of her flying across the country to raise money for other Democrats - something that up until a few days ago Bernie hadn't done, and Hillary has been doing from the start of the campaign - but that's another issue; legally there's no problem.
Bernie's trip to Rome is not directly related to campaigning. He therefore cannot legally use campaign contributions to pay for it, but he did. Of course, Bernie seems not to give a flying fuck about FEC regulations; he's been taking single-check contributions that exceed FEC limits and contributions from outside the country.
Sorry, but this trip had nothing to do with campaigning and he needs to be sanctioned for spending campaign contributions on it.
