A writ of mandamus is a court order that commands a government official or a lower court to perform a specific duty that the law requires them to do. It is used when a public official refuses or neglects to perform a mandatory, non-discretionary act, and is not a way to challenge discretionary decisions. In simple terms, it is a legal command to "do what you are supposed to do" when you are supposed to do it.

Purpose: To compel performance of a public duty that is required by law.
