1 or 2 businesses, usually a factory, that employed most of the people. When manufacturing went abroad, the local economy collapsed. Low paying service jobs, were the only ones left, like clerking in a store or fast food restaurant. But when locals had less money to spend after manufacturing left, the smaller retail businesses closed up, leaving the chains like Wal-Mart as the place to find a job. Low pay, no health benefits, mostly part time.

Small towns and villages became rural slums in some regions. Closed businesses, run down homes that people could not keep up. Commuting to a city for work became necessary for people with reliable cars. A lot of people just moved away. Some found that there was money to make in dealing drugs.
