Because together we produced fertile offspring as proven by DNA analysis. As the OP noted, individuals whose distant ancestors migrated from Africa are likely to have Neanderthal DNA.

My husband and I have had our DNA analyzed and we both have the typical 2.5% Neanderthal mix. We both have above average IQs, no arrest records and vote Democratic.

Dinosaurs didn't entirely die out; some became birds. The same process with Neanderthals; some became us.
