Back in the McCarthy era on through the firing up of the Cold War, the feeling was similar--everyone was on guard, we could be nuked at any moment, duck-and-cover, Better Dead Than Red, etc., etc.

The only thing that changes is the Monster Under The Bed. We still haven't quite figured out how to convince people to not fight over stuff. One day, I suppose!
