37. California counting continues in cliff-hanger primary votes, Steve Hilton out in front, Spencer Pratt still in the runni

TV commentator Steve Hilton said he can overcome the odds and become California's first Republican governor in more than 15 years as he maintained his lead in the primary race on Wednesday.

Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra, a former Biden Cabinet secretary, have taken an early lead in what was a crowded field of more than 60 candidates vying to replace Gavin Newsom, who has served the maximum number of terms as governor.

With 58% of votes counted, Hilton was ahead with 27.6% of the vote, and Becerra had 25.6%, according to AP. Billionaire Tom Steyer, a Democrat, trailed with 19.8%.

The Associated Press has not yet projected which two candidates will advance, and the second-place spot could shift as late mail-in ballots are counted through June 9.
