I specialize in kids with school problems and they can do well in life with reading, writing and math with an 8th gr. education IF they learn a trade. If they're not interested in academics and they're mid-older teens, teach them a trade they ARE interested in.
Otherwise, they end up in required language and high level courses they can't do well in/don't want to do well in/aren't interested in, and it's a waste of time. Maybe when they hit their 20's they'll want to return to school to improve basic skills; meanwhile, teach them something they can earn a living at in h.s.
Otherwise, we will continue to have kids graduating h.s. with poor skills who can't get jobs, continuing the poverty cycle.
