In reply to the discussion: Venezuela's opposition leader Machado wins Nobel Peace Prize [View all]cab67
(3,505 posts)Maduro is a brutal dictator.
I have a good friend and collaborator (scientific) who had to flee Venezuela when he was tipped off that the police were coming for him. He managed to get his family safely to Colombia. HIs only "crime" was being an academic.
Seriously - opposing Maduro from within Venezuela is an act of extreme courage.
I didn't say I concur with the approaches she endorses - only that I understand why she might have done so.
And as I've said, she isn't necessarily aligning herself with right-wing ideologues. She's pushing for regime change, and the vector is not that important to her. There were efforts from within Venezuela to have Biden intervene. They also called for Obama to do so.
Biden and Obama did the right thing by not intervening, but having been to Venezuela, I can understand why some in that country would like to see an outside power - even gringoes, who would otherwise be seen (correctly) as colonialists - do something.
