President Donald Trump said Monday that his administration is in talks with Democrats over the pressing issue of health care subsidies as the first United States government shutdown in nearly seven years continues. Newsweek reached out to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's office via email for comment.
Why It Matters
The U.S. government shutdown, now approaching its seventh day, has resulted in disruptions for millions of federal workers and heightened concerns about the future of health care funding. At the heart of the deadlock are negotiationsor the lack thereofbetween Trump's administration and Democratic congressional leaders over the future of key health care subsidies, which cover millions of Americans. The protracted standoff threatens to disrupt essential government services and reshape the debate over health care access and federal authority.
What To Know
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, in part, "We want great health care for people. We don't want to give the money away to other people that come pouring into our country...we have a negotiation going on right now with the Democrats that could lead to very good things. I'm talking about good things with regard to health care."
He added, "We could have a much better health care than we have right now." "I'd like to see a deal made for great health care," the president added, "I'm a Republican but I want to see health care much more so than the Democrats."
