7. T. cruzi is a nasty disease

It is only curable in the early stages, and late stage disease is terrible. Unlike its African cousins, the T. cruzi parasite spends a lot of its life cycle inside host cells, thus able to avoid the host immune system. And once the vital organs are infected it’s a mess.
