it was actually the first time I got to see a military rifle up close and personal. 
The soldiers were young (had to be barely out of their teens) stationed at Luxor's airport and Abu Simbel's airports. They were stationed by the xray machines for baggage. This was literally about 18 months after Desert Storm when there was a lull and a tiny bit of stability in the area.
