They're never going to let that rationale go.

From Russia's perspective, it was a coup. Yanukovytch was elected; he was overthrown. Never mind Russia's interference leading up to his election, never mind his scrapping of the EU economic agreement that parliament had approved, never mind the brutal police actions and street battles in Kiev, never mind the 73% of Parliament vote to oust that corrupt quisling; coups are illegitimate.

Therefore, Russia gets to take back Russian-speaking areas: Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk. AKA "Little Russia".
