(7,794 posts)One year I had a situation of mistrust with my employer regarding the taxable amount of my personal truck reimbursement for company use. They had me to create and fill out a log describing usage. They then reimbursed me a preset amount. After a few years of this I asked why they needed that log and received a non-answer. I took my W-2's and my logs and my stubs from the reimbursement checks to an accountant. She told me she'd get back to me and she did the next day asking if I could provide stubs and copies of logs from previous years. I did and then a couple days later she called and told me to come pick up the returns. She charged me $250.00 but I had a surprise refund coming (from not only that years' but for 3 previous years' truck allowance). I netted $2,500.00 which I never expected plus my refund from my regular salary was also 50% higher than ever before. I'd already done a TurboTax run through and none of these improvements in refund showed with it. Additionally, when she did the taxes, she became liable for the accuracy of the data so long as I didn't try to hide anything. We both signed a contract to that effect. I joked with her at the time that when they put me in jail she'd have the cell next to mine and she said it's her job to prevent me overpaying or underpaying the government. Ever since that year I was happy to give her $175.00 to do my taxes. I'd have been childish not to. Accountants are great for stuff like that.
