It is still possible yet that we might fight Russia directly in Ukraine for humanitarian reasons.

If the US gets into direct fighting with Russia in Ukraine, we will go it alone. NATO will have no obligation to join us if we choose to enter the war directly against Russia because that would be a voluntary choice, without being the victim of an attack.

Such an action by the US would create divides in NATO which is exactly what Putin wants. A weakened NATO and EU works in Russia's favor.
