Surely not a joke or half-witted idea. Something more went on there.

Passing it off as a prank or undoable because she didn't have the cash and should know that she didn't

sounds like the Belfour defense, an athlete who famously according to online reports in his inebriated state offered Texas officers a 'billion' dollars not to arrest him.
