If the question doesn't have a ready made answer, or just doesn't computer in their brain, or maybe is threatening, then any answer is trotted out.
Making the noises seems to be important, actually answering the question isn't.
But living with someone - the wife - who always answers a question with another question, I've learnt my way around that.
Simple example:
Me: would you like a cup of coffee?
She: why, you having one?
or
She: I don't think there is enough milk is there?
or
She: Don't use that cheap coffee!
or
All three questions and directives.
Now its:
Me: I'm making myself a cup of coffee. I've checked, there is plenty of milk, and I'm going to use the good coffee. And yes, I will rinse your cup out first.
Would you like one too?
. . . and blow me down, sometimes I get a simple 'yes' or 'no' in response!
