40. I Remember that short story
Mon Oct 3, 2016, 10:58 AM
Oct 2016

The lady is going to a ball that will have important people in attendance. Her husband tells her not to fuss and she is beautiful and needs no fine jewelry. Not satisfied she goes to her rich , childhood friend who tells her to pick out anything she likes from her jewelry box. She finds a diamond necklace and asks to borrow that and her friend tells her to enjoy herself.

She goes to the dance and has a magical time . On return to their apartment, she discovers the necklace is missing and panic mode sets in. She goes to a jeweler who sells her an identical one on credit at an astronomical price. When she returns the necklace her friend just throws it - with a dismissive air -into the jewelry box with a comment that she should have returned it sooner.

Paying for the necklace involves poverty, moving to a cheaper apartment, and austerity to the max. She takes in menial jobs and literally works herself and her husband to death. But after years, the necklace is paid for.

As she is sitting in the park, she recognizes her rich friend and decides to tell her of her sacrifices . Her friend is , at first unable to recognize her due to her changed, haggard appearance, tells her that the necklace she lent was paste.

A good short story - thanks for reminding me
