Seems it's a well-worn plot LOL. The version I had in mind is a novella by Louise de Vilmorin called "Madame de" that was made into a movie called "The Earrings of Madame De" in the 1950s. The plot involves a lady of quality who falls into debt and fakes the theft of a pair of diamond earrings given to her by her husband which she discretely sells back to the jeweler who first sold them to Monsieur who buys them a second time after the theft gets in the papers and the jeweler pays a call. Monsieur then gives them to a parting mistress who sells them to a dealer in Constantinople who sells them to an Italian diplomat named Donati who falls in love with Madame De and gives her the earrings and we're just getting started . . . .
