If you are talking about the short story about the woman who lost a fake diamond necklace, bought a real diamond to replace the fake diamond, and then worked years of hard labor to pay off the debt only to find out the diamond she lost was fake that was Maupassant. Flaubert may have also written about women in financial distress.
