The company that has planned a huge and controversial mine in northern Wisconsin announced Friday that it was closing its office near the mine site, saying the project was not feasible now.
"Our parent company felt there wasn't enough certainty to it," Gogebic Taconite president Bill Williams told the Wisconsin State Journal. Williams said the company would continue to "investigate" a possible iron mine, but it is closing its Hurley office. Williams said he couldn't say if there was much chance of the project being revived. "We don't want to throw out false hope," Williams said. "They'll still take a gander, but we don't intent on putting out false hopes for anyone."...

This is the company that
donated $700,000 to the Scott Walker campaign and was allowed to essentially write its own mining legislation. They also were the first company to bring mercenaries to Wisconsin, which didn't help their community relations efforts, much.
