In reply to the discussion: Got charged for driving on a toll road and didn't even know it... [View all]PJMcK
(24,271 posts)32. Many toll roads are changing to automatic tolling
I live on the east coast and we use a system called EZ-Pass. Many of the tolling stations are converting to a "No Cash Tolling" system. The governing authorities have installed many signs explaining the process. If you don't have an EZ-Pass transponder, they will photograph your license plate and send the bill to the registered owner. It has been a tremendous improvement in traffic management. The traffic backups that generally occur at toll plazas have been diminished and the reduced toll rates are welcomed by drivers.
Check the routes that you're traveling. Perhaps there are lower cost alternatives. However, I'm a huge fan of cash-free tolling because it keeps the traffic moving at a consistent pace.

The transponders are set up to be national. You can buy one that is recognized everywhere.

yeah, especially when you get to an unattended gate that won't lift until you find some change.

Most of the time, you'll just go under one of those signs that go across all the lanes.

Paying a toll in cash provides jobs which may raise the cost of collecting the toll

Get used to it. This is how the GOP plans to fund infrastructure re-building.
