The overwhelming number of interactions between the police and the public, including those where force is used doesn't involve lethal force. Just because you may hear of more, doesn't actually mean it's very common.
The reported number of people killed by local police is 400 a year. That's just over 1 a day.

A knife is a lethal weapon and the only option when a knife is involved is lethal force.
