but what ruins it for me is that she wouldn't have accepted unless some kind payment was forked over. This is wrong no matter what culture practices it and should be challenged in every culture. Moreover, it is a way patriarchy continues to control women and the young by telling them who, usually the father, sets the standards for them to accept a relationship under. It is both misogynist and ageist. This insistence that some kind of monetary reward accompany every relationship only perpetuates the worst obsession of humanity - materialism - and, in many cases, can do more harm to families than good by driving them apart. It's Capitalism hijacking Love. Nothing could be more detestable to me.
