117. In my town all the kids get free lunches.

If you don't want your kid to participate, you send them to school with a lunch.

It felt awkward to me at first, but it was obvious how well it worked.

Nobody differentiated between kids. Even kids who have little or nothing will bring their own lunches sometimes. Lunch is not a mark of status one way or another.

A secondary consideration in our school district is that so many kids qualify for free lunches it would cost too much to set up a system to account for the kids who can afford lunches and collect money from their parents.
