52. The physics are the same as a tractor trailer....

....or a train,...or a grocery cart for that matter. It's easier to pull or push something on it's own wheels than it is to carry it yourself. Once underway it tens to stay in motion. You only experience trouble on grades.

It's possible we could see pickups on hills some day. Either "third rail" or overhead.
