(2,322 posts)Out of 76 "Latest" threads seven are on the topic of Michelle Obama or the boobs joke. And three of those are THIS thread. That's currently--it could change of course in the next minute or so, but I really doubt that we're going to go over, say 8-10 per 80 threads. Hardly the "entire site." I see far more threads on the Sequester issue than on anything else. Also on racism, GOP lies, and health care. So I'd say that the DU is doing its job and discussing very serious and important things.
I'd also say that that whether the joke was "gotten" or not, the discussion over it shows that women are tired of the acceptance of a fifth-grade mentality of jokes at their expense--and that includes such "joking" made by trolls on various sites which is not joking at all but serious misogyny. This is what's coming out in these discussions. Hardly a frivolous topic.
In the end, I'd say that if the boob song is the tipping point that makes women and men start to reject such misogyny as unacceptable then those DU threads are doing their job. Sometimes small, seemingly stupid things are the final straw, the opening of the door to something large and more important--to big changes even. If we start to see a sea change in regards to such misogyny thanks this crazy and over-the-top outrage over the boob song, then I'd say the discussions did their job here on the DU and elsewhere. Even if they didn't take over the entire site.
