I was the CO of a reserve installation in the Clinton years. My policy was no political talk in front of the troops. Their oath is pretty specific about obeying the orders of the President and Officers in their chain of command. I relieved the CO of one reserve unit because he couldn't quit his Clinton bashing in front of his troops. Totally agree with your last paragraph.
