12. In unrelated news, I just read that the country has a nursing shortage of about 350,000 nurses.

That shortage will be even more of a crisis as our Baby Boomers are reaching that age where they need more and more medical and nursing care.

We are pricing patients out of the health insurance market as insurance corporations bleed us dry. Even if you can afford insurance, healthcare is often mediocre or unavailable due to cost-cutting, profit-taking, and staff shortages.

I talked to a friend last week who has been diagnosed with cancer. He has waited six weeks for a consultation with an oncologist and still has not got an appointment. My neighbor lives alone and has age-related dementia. Her family is trying to get her in to see a neurologist for an evaluation. They will have to wait five months for a consultation.

Having healthcare run as a for-profit business is insane. To be sure, any healthcare system will have problems. But our current system is DESIGNED to put patients last and profits first.

The less value a patient gets for their money, the more profit the corporations get.
