There's some silver and gold oakleafs that are going to be retiring early over this.
Military Commanders carry responsibility for all mistakes their units make, and there is very rarely a chance to "fall upwards", especially if there's an international incident involved.
My assessment - Only possible explanation that doesn't involve pure incompetence and lack of leadership is if their GPS systems were hacked - not malfunctioning, hacked ...
And even then, gold braid wearing heads are going to roll - that is, if it wasn't a bunch of Prince's Mercs trying to prove their Christian Warriors are better and tougher than Marines...
