Had to guess the effect but it will shrink the economy in some form. But then I checked the numbers and it is "only" just under $100 billion a year, around 0.33% of our annual GDP. Now I'd guess there is a multiplier effect, as folks spend the money, then the grocers pay for the food and employees and then the food producers get paid. So the multiplier might be 3 to 5 or more times over the course of the year. Then this has the chance to reduce GDP by 2% or more in knock on effects.
