People gathered in the streets of Downtown Pittsburgh for a “No Kings” protest Saturday, as part of one of more than a dozen similar events planned around Western Pennsylvania and more than 2,500 nationwide, organizers say. The protests come four months after millions of Americans marched in what became known as the “Day of Defiance” in a direct response to President Trump’s military parade in Washington.

Indivisible Pittsburgh, responsible for organizing the rally, said Saturday’s return is meant to show that momentum hasn’t faded. “We reject strongman politics and corruption and will fight until we get the representation we deserve,” the group wrote in a news release.

At noon Saturday, a half hour before the Downtown protest officially started at 12:30 p.m., the block of Grant Street outside the City-County building was blocked off as hundreds rallied to protest the Trump administration. Protesters donned “No Kings” shirts and signs in rebuke of what organizers describe as President Donald Trump’s “authoritarian takeover” of the U.S. government. Many waved American flags, some upside down — a traditional Naval signal used to express distress.

The rally kicked off with a speech by Witold “Vic” Walczak, legal director at the Pennsylvania ACLU, who listed a litany of recent government actions — from book bans to immigration enforcement — he said violates civil rights. “We have achieved too much over this nation’s history to give up now,” he said. “We the people demand justice for all.”
