Even before Trump entered the political scene, rightwing propagandists were stoking fears that Hispanics are replacing Whites, essentially destroying America.

Trump siezed on this, demonizing Hispanics and breaking norms of discourse in ways that energized voters with long simmering grievances. Demagogues have often directed populist angst at scapegoats. Anti-immigrant bigotry has a long history in America, going back to the "know nothings" of the 1800's.
