First, Colbert’s contract goes through next May. So if they fired him now they would have had to pay him off.
Second, the advertising upfronts for the next broadcast year were closed out in May. So they have sold the show to advertisers through next May. If they pulled the show now, the network would have to give that money back. That would be a huge loss.
