'Children Will Suffer,' UNICEF Warns, As GOP Guts Aid Group's Funding [View all]

Republicans Cave & Pass Megabill Scroll back up to restore default view.
WASHINGTON ― Senate Republicans voted Thursday to cut U.S. funding for major foreign aid programs, including a historic organization responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to vulnerable children.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), created in the aftermath of World War II, has saved millions of lives by raising immunization rates for children across the world. As the world’s largest single vaccine procurer, the organization has helped to reduce the spread of diseases like polio, measles and smallpox.

UNICEF also provides critical support for children caught in violence and conflict, providing safe water, sanitation services, lifesaving supplies, health care, and nutrition to those in need.

The Trump administration, however, called this kind of humanitarian aid “antithetical to American interests” and requested it be rescinded. Citing examples of “wasteful” spending, it called for eliminating $137 million in funding for UNICEF that lawmakers previously approved for this year, as well as cutting spending for other humanitarian programs.
