16. I spent some of my childhood years in a Pentecostal church.

Around ages 7-8-9. I saw this sort of performance on a weekly basis. Oh, Sunday school and church afterward were rather subdued. What you might see in any church of a Sunday morning. But the Sunday night service? Man, that was when they'd really let their hair down. It was all fire and brimstone that scared the absolute shit out of me. Then came the alter call. That's when the performance art really began. First it was the tongues, shouting and crying to the heavens. If it went on long enough, they'd fall to the floor and roll around, kicking their legs in the air. A nearby chivalrous man would often remove his coat and throw it over their legs to preserve their modesty.

A fucking circus, it was. And me just a wide-eyed kid wondering why we left the nice Methodists for these loons.
