I read a book about the Chicks a while back, and the way it described the switch from Lynch to Maines reminded me of how the Beatles replaced Pete Best with Ringo Starr just as they were on the threshold of fame and fortune. It was quite a a story.

According to the book, Lynch was a pretty good sport about the whole thing, which says a lot about her as a person, imo. I think she may have sensed that Emily and Martie were hankering to take the band in a different direction and was surprised but not exactly shocked when it happened.

Natalie Maines is such an amazing singer that I can't really blame E. and M. for wanting to perform with her.
