'Neocon' had a distinct whiff of 'the Hidden Hand of the Jew' about it at its emergence, the line being that they were manipulating US policy in the Near East to serve Israeli interests, not US interests, and was initially not a left but a rightist usage. I've never detected much meaning besides that in the term. Taken neutrally it is nothing, a melange of liberal interventionism and realpolitik tough-guy posturing served with a sauce of free-marketeering....
