It has a folk etymology relating it to people arguing the Soviets were right to send tanks into Czechoslovakia in '68, because that stymied NATO aggression. My memories of that time are innocent of the expression.

It is used today to refer to people who take the view that anyone opposing the Atlantic powers, or anyone the Atlantic powers oppose, is the side in the right, by definition. Because the Atlantic powers constitute the greatest concentration of evil in the world, and oppress and seek to oppress further, everyone else. So nothing else need be known of any situation to know what's the right side in it....
