The Stazi (Soviet-era East German state police) had an extensive network of snitches, and would use any leverage they could get to expand that list.

Never pass up an opportunity to equate right-wing authoritarian tactics with Warsaw Pact police states. The Right does as much to us for fantasy-level associations.
