Trump tried to help the insurrectionists achieve that goal by trying to buy them more time: by getting the lawmakers to delay the certification, and refusing to order Pence to go forward with it.

So the insurrectionists were trying to help him and Trump was trying to help them. They were working in tandem to achieve the same goal: to stop Pence from declaring Biden the winner that day.
