Perception often trumps reality (no pun intended) - and they're very good at using people's frustrations against them, as in your very vivid example.

I knew a guy like that once. His father was a wealthy Orange County lawyer, and he spent the year of a lifetime in Costa Rica at 22.

And there I was, stuck working in a grocery store to pay for community college.

But he was a great guy - no ego, and a staunch Democrat to boot. Still is, I trust (must be 45 now).

I'm glad it was him - and not some conceited, Ayn Rand-toting trust fund baby (of which there are so many in the OC).
