4. Awhile back he said he was maintaining his GOP membership specifically to be "a thorn in their side"

That’s it. I like the guy — he’s intelligent and honest and completely disgusted.

A few years ago, before COVID, I was channel cruising and happened on a CSPAN broadcast of Steele talking to a group of Republican youngsters in DC (possibly new interns) There are two things I specifically remember: his background as a seminarian, and his answer to some naive little thing who wanted to know if the GOP should be asserting its “moral authority” as it had in the past. He burst out, “Oh hell no!” and went on a small rant starting with, “Any party that tells me who I can and cannot marry…” I was impressed.
