The founding fathers knew only the 'arm(S)' of 1789. Any other choice would be a slap in the face of those fine folk who elevated those weapons to sanctified status.

Of course, the possibility does exist that the founding fathers were sociopaths like today's 2nd A apologists, and perhaps the men of 1789 would be OK with 21st century mass carnage.
