But him being a rather lackluster candidate made his brand of progressivism even that much easier to attack. A stronger progressive candidate could have possibly won, but this was supposed to be the strong progressive candidate that could win. And he didn't.

Given how well Evers performed, I think, at least during this particular race and at this particular time, a similar "more moderate" candidate would have beaten Johnson. Barnes was just not a good candidate and certainly not good enough to overcome the inevitable attacks that come when you are a strong progressive in a purple state.
