Sent the army into the South doubt to keep the States from succeeding.

History as I have read it says South Carolina succeeded from the Union in December of 1860, followed by other state over a period of months. There was no conflict until Fort Sumter in April of 1861 and that was initiated by the Confederacy. Even after that provocation the Union did not send major forces against the South until July.

Given the timeline and slow response to succession it seems disingenuous to say the North attacked the South. In modern terms it would be more apt to say Lincoln was attempting sanctions and negotiations to retain the Union until he was left with no option but the use of force.
