As I recall, the HQs for the 5th Special Forces (Green Berets) was nearby.

I was stationed just to the south at Cam Ranh in '68.

I recall an incident when some drunken GI shot up the mess hall and they took all of our weapons from us. We had to check them out if we went on a convoy or left the base. The gun restrictions in a war zone at that time were stronger than any gun restrictions in this country today.
