which is the Latin for a measure of weight (as well as 'scales') - 'lira' comes from that too. Old British money, used until 1971, was called 'Lsd' (before the drug ...) - standing for Libra, solidus (for the shilling) and denarius (for the penny). The proper abbreviation for an old penny was 'd', so a price could be £1.2s.6d.
