12. I remember back in the 90s when Russia supposedly regained their "freedom" from USSR.

People here were rejoicing in seeing people vote and the state giving shares in previously owned state industries, etc. Jimmy Carter if I remember correctly said something to the effect of No, this isn't a democracy. They had no constitution and no concept of rule of law. The country did nothing to stop those "shares" of the industries from being scooped up by the soon to be oligarchs who were previously party officials from people who had no idea what the shares were worth, no laws to protect people from the rich and powerful.
